We worked closely with famed illustrator Chris Ware to create an issue cover that came to life on newstands and online. Each game in the issue was also digitally playable, and we wanted to make sure we infused the experience with the small clever moments the magazine was known for.
As design lead on this project, this meant I got to pair with our brilliant senior designer Sara de Lira, who initially came up with the idea for a game board as an interactive experience. Together with the New Yorker Humor team, we developed delightful hover states and illustrations for the illustrations throughout, as well as a custom cursor that mirrored the issue cover.
Our team developed the initial color palette that eventually was used throughout the issue. We drew inspiration from the candy-colored games of yore, as well as some of the New Yorker's core colors used throughout the Humor section. Spot illustration by Joohee Yoon.
One of the biggest draws of the digital experience was that readers could play the games from the issue digitally, or in print. We worked closely with the Interactives team to build out an easy-to-use experience for playing the games on web.
